NA Cocktail: Hibiscus Swizzle

After celebrating in December with friends and family, we could all use a break. For some of us, that might mean our organs need a break from consuming alcohol. This non-alcoholic cocktail is refreshing and might just have you feeling like booking a vacation on a warm, sandy beach to get away from the winter blues.

Hibiscus Swizzle

shopping list —

  • crushed ice

  • 3 oz blackberry juice

  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

  • 3/4 ounce hibiscus syrup

  • 1 ounce chilled club soda

for the hibiscus syrup —

  • 8 oz sugar

  • 8 oz water

  • 2 bags hibiscus tea

equipment —

  • collins glass

  • swizzle stick

steps —

  1. Bring the sugar and water to a boil to make a simple syrup. Steep the hibiscus tea bags for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag and cool the simple syrup. (The recipe will make more simple syrup than you need.)

  2. Combine all the ingredients in a Collins glass. Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice. Stir rapidly with a swizzle stick by holding the stick in between the palms of both hands and rotate the stick rapidly by rubbing your hands back and forth. The spinning motion of the swizzle aerates and cools the drink.

  3. Top the glass with additional crushed ice and serve.

You can sub out the blackberry juice for any tart berry juice, like pomegranate — but make sure you adjust the quantity of simple syrup depending on how tart the juice is.
