Q&A with Jungle Theater: The Effect
The Effect
When Connie and Tristan sign up for a clinical trial to test a new antidepressant, they fall for each other—hearts racing, knees buckling—hard. But are their feelings real or nothing more than a dopamine-fueled side effect?
Lucy Prebble’s (Succession) razor sharp writing keeps audiences guessing, asking which is more powerful—the head or the heart?
By Lucy Prebble
Directed By Alison Ruth
Featuring Christina Baldwin, Kamani Graham, Becca Claire Hart, & Greg Watanabe
What is The Effect about?
The play is about love, neuroscience and pharmacology
The play explores questions of:
The limits of medicine
The ethics of medical industry - it's a giant, financial enterprise that is highly flawed (scientifically & morally)
Psychology
Sanity. What does that really mean? Who is actually sane?
Love. What is love? Can you manufacture it?
Why did you choose this show?
We enjoy the dry wit of Lucy Prebble's writing. (She is also known for being a writer on Succession.) It's a cerebral conversations about broad human themes - love, ambition, sadness/depression. We liked the interesting, meaty, complicated characters she wrote.
A note from the Director Alison Ruth:
What is most exciting to me about this play is that the big questions THE EFFECT presents are not just philosophical ones, they are life changing. For reasons that unfurl throughout the play, they are desperate to comprehend their own emotions so that they can save themselves – spiritually and physically.
A high-stakes and compelling experience that throws out a fascinating question that you’ll ponder after the show is over. You will be too engrossed in the captivating story and characters to muse during it.

Your ticket will cover all fundraising asks for the entire evening. There will be no auction, no secondary program, no fund-a-need asks, no 4 hour evening. Just a Jungle show and some added celebration of live theater.
